When accessing a file remotely on NAS box it keeps making a copy of file

Windows/Mac Version: W10
When accessing a Word or Excel document remotely from home (stored on a NAS box in office) it automatically makes a copy file. I suspect it is because that file is already opened in the office. How can I tell if it is open if that is the case or is there a bigger problem.
