I installed NetDrive 3.18.845. Is it necessary to enable loading of extensions? Is there a guide that isn’t eight years old for installing on MacOS? Having to boot in recovery mode to install software isn’t “great”. The ability to load extensions will not be available much longer, I’m sure. Are you planning to make an Apple Silicon version, that uses modern frameworks? The first M1 Macs are now six years old.
Thank you for your feedback. I completely understand your frustration regarding the installation process on macOS. Having to boot into Recovery Mode to lower security settings is indeed far from an ideal user experience.
To answer your questions:
1. Current Requirements
Yes, with the current version of NetDrive (3.18.845), it is necessary to enable the loading of kernel extensions. This is because NetDrive currently relies on a FUSE-based file system driver to mount drives, which requires these specific permissions to function on macOS.
2. Modern Frameworks and Apple Silicon
You are absolutely correct that the legacy kernel extension method is being deprecated and that M1/Apple Silicon Macs have been the standard for quite some time.
-
Our Plan: We are planning to update NetDrive to support modern macOS frameworks (specifically the Apple File Provider API). This will provide native support for Apple Silicon and eliminate the need for kernel extensions and Recovery Mode steps.
-
Timeline: While we do not have a fixed deadline for this release yet, we are committed to starting development on this transition as soon as possible.
3. Documentation and Inconvenience
I apologize that our current guides feel outdated and for the inconvenience caused by the complex installation process. We know this is a pain point for our Mac users, and we are eager to move toward the modern standard.
Thank you for your patience as we work to improve this.
Best regards,
NetDrive Support Team
